Inside the Studio: The Story Behind A Splash of Fiber

Welcome to my studio journal — a cozy corner where I share the stories, colors, and creative messes behind my hand-dyed yarns.

When you walk into my dye studio, you’ll usually find a bit of chaos — skeins of yarn hanging and drying, dye pots simmering, and every inch of counter space covered in color. But to me, that’s where the magic happens. There’s something about watching color bloom on soft wool that never loses its excitement.

My favorite part of the dyeing process is the chemistry of it all — the careful measurements, the testing, the tweaking until that one perfect shade appears. I often pull inspiration from color palettes, photos, and outdoor scenery, especially the rich and cozy hues of fall. It’s all a bit of trial and error, but that’s part of the fun. Some of my favorite colorways were happy accidents that didn’t turn out how I planned but ended up even better. There’s never a bad accident when you’re playing with color.

Music is always playing while I work — anything from country to 80s hits to oldies — whatever fits the mood that day. And while my husband might disagree, I love the smell of wet wool. It’s the scent of creativity in progress, the smell of a studio day in full swing.

I keep my color recipes digitally but print them out and store them in a big binder. Each page is labeled with its colorway name, like a little archive of my yarn journey. One of my proudest creations so far is my Wild Orchard colorway — it pairs beautifully with Berrywine, and I’d love to make something with the two together someday.

I’ve always been a maker at heart. Ever since I was little, I’ve had some kind of craft project going — latch hook rugs, scrapbooking, needlepoint, woodworking, painting, home décor. If it involved creating something by hand, I was doing it. Later, I taught myself to crochet at 17 and eventually learned to knit. I’ve made just about everything you can think of — baby items, afghans, hats, scarves, mittens, washcloths, even pumpkins. Crafting is part of who I am; I don’t think I’d know myself without it.

A Splash of Fiber was born from that same love of creating. I wanted to design my own colorways — the exact shades that make my heart happy — and share them with others who love working with yarn as much as I do. Every skein is made with joy, patience, and a little bit of that “let’s see what happens” spirit.

When customers open one of my packages, I want them to feel that joy too — to be amazed by the colorway, inspired to start their next project, and delighted by what’s inside. My hope is that every skein makes them as happy as it made me to create it.

I’m just a down-to-earth, country-at-heart girl who loves yarn, color, and the simple happiness of making something beautiful with my hands. Running this business doesn’t feel like work to me — it feels like doing what I was meant to do.
